The Journal, Sunday, 8/13

Hey Folks,

Wow. I’ve done absolutely nothing today re writing. Not even on the handout for the upcoming seminar. Nada.

Went to the grocery, then out to lunch, then back to the house to try to watch a ball game. But I have DirecTV so it’s blacked out when a game is being played within 10,000 miles of my house. So I watched a few episodes of Forensic Files instead.

Then I came in here to post this.

So nothing today, just a placeholder. Back at it tomorrow.

Hey Folks,

Well, I know at least part of today will include a trip to Sierra Vista. I hope part of the trip will include lunch. (grin)

This morning after my routine, I designed two covers, created two promo docs, then published two short stories to D2D and Amazon, then uploaded them to BundleRabbit.

Finally I added the covers and universal buy links to the Short Fiction page on my website. I took a moment to do some multiplication. Goodness. I have 181 short stories now.

Went to SV around 10 and got back a little after 1. I’ll work a little more on the handout today, then call it a day.

Kind’a silly keeping count of what I write for the handout too. I’ll stop that. If I do the book later, I’ll count it then.

Hey Folks,

I did pretty much nothing writing related today other than working on the handout for the upcoming intensive. Did a lot of stuff outside and around the office.

Man, I’d forgotten how difficult it is to put on one of these things and prepare for it. (grin) But it’s all good.

For one thing, I decided to scrap the nonfiction book idea for now. That will come after the seminar(s) is over, if at all. Right now I just wanna teach a good class.

Today I did a lot of back-and-forth stuff, going from the handout I’m preparing to various stories and novels for examples, and so on. Time-consuming stuff.

The Journal, Thursday, 8/10

Hey Folks,

I don’t remember whether I’ve mentioned this before, but if anyone would like to read “The Fiction Factory” (being the Experience of a Writer who, for Twenty-two Years, has kept a Story-mill Grinding Successfully) by John Milton Edwards, send me an email and I’ll send you a PDF copy. Very interesting stuff. Chock full of gems.

Part of my recent problem (“problem” is too harsh a word) is that my brain is trying to shut down to allow for the new knowledge I’ll absorb during the workshop I’m currently taking from Dean.

Of course, that’s absurd. Nothing I’ve already learned and made my own through application of my fingertips on the keyboard will be replaced or changed. I’ll grow a bit in understanding, but that’s all.

Nothing he says supplants anything he’s said before. Much he says enhances what’s gone before, but nothing detracts. I think that’s why I’ve taken so many of his workshops (10 at this point) and listened to so many of his lectures.

If you’ve never taken a DWS workshop, and if you’d like to try a free one, I still have the URLs for all six weeks of his Originality workshop (he offers it free on YouTube). Email me and I’ll send the whole list. Forty videos in all, probably 7 – 10 minutes each. Please be sure to remind me it’s the Originality video.

Speaking of workshops, I now have 6 hearty souls signed up for Wednesday, 16 August. (That’s next week!) The latest addition was someone I’ve never met or talked with. A friend referred him. Anyway, if you’re local/regional and you want in, there are only a couple of slots left.

If the thing goes even nearly as well as I think it will, I’ve already decided to do it again, probably in October. That session will be on a Saturday. I have a particular writer in mind. I’ll let her pick the Saturday, then announce it.

Well, for the past several weeks I’ve been trying to adapt to my old writing space (The Hovel). I pumped a lot of words through my laptop out there.

I couldn’t quite make it all work out, and finding a nest of wood scorpions out there a couple days ago put a cap on it for me.

What I need is a space, not necessarily that space. This morning, just about the time it got too hot for physical labor, I carried my small desk from The Hovel up to my office. It fit.

My cat has more surface to walk and lounge on, so she’s happy, and it’s comfortable for me. I can switch from prepping workshops, email etc. on this computer to writing on Hal by simply backing up a foot or so and turning right.

I don’t even have to say I’ll see how it goes. It felt right as soon as I put the little desk in place. So The Hovel is once again the storage shed.

I did buy a portable swamp cooler to use out there not long ago. But I’ll transfer it to the camping trailer we use as a spare bedroom for guests. It’s all good.

I’ll spend the balance of today putting together some things for the upcoming workshop. I’ve decided to write a nonfiction book based on the upcoming workshop. I’ll write it first, then deliver the workshop(s), then revise and publish the book sometime probably next year.

The Journal, Wednesday, 8/9

Hey Folks,

Well, I guess I’m taking a full-blown hiatus for a week or so. No writing today.

No worries and no reason for concern. I think I’m just a little tired. Doing a lot of non-writing things right now, mixed in with a lot of reading, sitting and nothing.

I think I’m gonna slack off on The Journal a bit too. It had served its purpose on this end awhile back, and I’ve heard from some of you that it’s been a boon on that end.

I’ll keep it going, but maybe not every day. The “streak” aspect of it has become less important. Maybe it’ll become just The Journal or something instead of The Daily Journal. (grin)

I’m also thinking of letting the other URL expire, the URL where it’s physically located now. I think that’s supposed to happen in April. The Journal seems awfully lonely over there.

So if I do that, I might move this back over to the main site if I decide not to post it every day. Maybe I’ll go once a week or something and post it in between regular posts.

Anyway, if I do move The Journal again, I’ll be sure to announce it here for those of you who subscribe via RSS.

I’ll keep up the word counts and all that, just in case some of you get something from that other than frustration and annoyance.

The Journal, Tuesday, 8/8

Hey Folks,

Well, I got a good night’s rest last night. Still not feeling up to par, but a little better maybe.

I decided to offer the ebook edition of The Rise of a Warrior to users of Facebook (and you) free of charge. You can read a description of the book at http://harveystanbrough.com/the-rise-of-a-warrior/.

The Rise of a Warrior is a stand-alone book, but it’s also chronologically the first book of the Wes Crowley series. All you have to do is email me to let me know whether you want Kindle, .epub or .pdf.

Thus far (about 6 hours into the offer) I’ve had one email from one guy who took me up on it. (grin) If anybody out there wants it, let me know.

This is a promo thing I’m doing. I’ll keep the offer open for probably a week.

***

Started a new online workshop with DWS this morning. As is usual, I learned something even in the introductory week. The course hasn’t yet paid for itself but it probably will by the end of next week’s session.

I’m being intentionally vague about this, but after I’ve finished the workshop I’ll tell you which one it was and critique it here. As is the case with most of his craft workshops, I expect to learn things I can use across the genres.

Today, and Writing

I rose at my normal time and wheedled away the entire morning. Still not feeling fully up to speed, so I haven’t pressed anything. In fact, I read quite a bit this morning, a nonfiction titled “I Hear You Paint Houses.”

The book is based on interviews with a man who claims to have been complicit in the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa. He was also one of Hoffa’s two closest friends.

The book is incredibly detailed, with many facts about the man’s personal experiences from childhood up through World War II (thus far). So I guess I could say I spent the morning doing research. (grin)

Finally, a little after noon, I put down my Kindle and came to write this stuff and then maybe write a little fiction.

No, I tweaked the header on my website, then the header on my HarveyStanbrough.com Facebook page. Simplified the text. An hour and a half later, I decided to make this a nonwriting day and maybe read some more.

Back tomorrow.

Hey Folks,

A little under the weather today. Nothing serious, just blah. Not sure how much writing I’ll get done, if any. Feels like a day of doing zip.

I added my most recent novel, a whodunit mystery, to the website. You can see it at http://harveystanbrough.com/the-implications/.

Topic: Ebook Editors (actually, formatting programs)

This stuff was going to go into “Of Interest” but it’s too important. Especially for those who are new to ebook publishing or thinking about ebook publishing.

If you fit either of those categories, or if you are frustrated with your current formatting process or software, here are a few articles I strongly recommend you read.

One: “How to Use Reedsy’s Book Editor to Format Ebooks and Print for Free” at https://selfpublishingadvice.org/how-to-use-reedsys-book-editor-to-format-ebooks-and-print/.

I’m not wild about the “‘for’ free” appelation, but the article itself is pretty good. I won’t be using Reedsy myself because

1. It’s browser based. There’s no program to download and I’m more of a want-it-on-my-computer kind of guy.

2. I’m happy with MS Word for my formatting. But I’ve been at it a long while so it’s easy-peasy.

Two: In light of my second note above, here’s a link to my free “The Essentials of Digital Publishing,” which explains in detail how to format your Word .doc for submission to Draft2Digital, Smashwords, et al (who then convert your .doc to .epub, .mobi and .pdf): http://harveystanbrough.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/DPubV2X.pdf/. I sold a bunch of copies for $10, and this is free. Just sayin’.

Three: For another article on using MS Word as a formatting platform, see “Book Production Advice: How to Format an Ebook using Microsoft Word” at https://selfpublishingadvice.org/book-production-advice-how-to-format-an-ebook-using-microsoft-word/. I’ve read it. It’s pretty good, but only for formatting ebooks.

Four: If you’re a Mac user, I recommend Vellum as I’ve heard nothing but great things about it. It’s not available for PCs, but you can read “Production: Vellum as a Formatting Tool for Print” at https://selfpublishingadvice.org/vellum-for-print/.

Five: Finally, if you’d like a simple but thorough guide into the ins and outs of Microsoft Word, check out my free blog series “Microsoft Word for Writers” at http://harveystanbrough.com/microsoft-word-for-writers/. Nothing I hate worse than receiving a manuscript for editing and seeing that the writer still used the Tab bar or the space bar to indent the first line of paragraphs. Ugh.

Today, and Writing

Rolled out way early again. Not sure why, and I didn’t feel well. I thought I might start another story, but if I wrote something today it would be just to put words on a page. So calling today a non-writing day.

Went to the grocery and the post office, did a load of laundry, read a little, watched some TV. Stuff like that.

Back tomorrow.

Hey Folks,

Not sure what the day will hold, but at least I got some writing done and finished the story.

Today, and Writing

I rose way early, a little before 2, so the girls could spend some time outside before the kids and grandkids get up. (My babies spend all their time under my bed when anyone’s visiting.)

I started writing at 4. Did a lot of cycling back to add in small details (verisimilitude, that) and wrote a little over 1400 words to finish the story. Probably no more writing today, and that’s fine.

After the visit I’ll watch some baseball.

See you tomorrow.

The Journal, Friday, 8/4

Hey Folks,

Back in June when I was writing a short story every day, I had a few I wanted to turn into novels. I’m going to glance back over those today.

If I find something that runs with me, I’ll write it.

If I don’t, I’ll start writing a short story every day again (beginning today) until I hit on an idea that wants to be a novel. (grin)

TOPIC: ISBNs, Copyright, etc.

I’m astounded by the general lack of knowledge of writers about the writing business as evidenced by some of the questions I receive.

This morning a friend wrote to ask whether he could use the CreateSpace (hereafter, CS) ISBN if he had the book printed by someone else. (No. Every edition of a book has to have a separate ISBN.)

CS charges no upfront fees. The only fee is a per-book charge of around $2 to $3 per book, and that’s your cost if you order copies of the book to sell yourself. Personally, I see no reason to even do that.

If you charge enough to put the book on Extended Distribution through CS, it will be listed through Ingram et al and offered for sale in all the various catalogs.

It will also show up in any Amazon (B&N, Kobo, etc.) search right alongside the ebook. And THAT’S the main reason I offer my books in paper. For the price comparison.

If you order a bunch of copies because you want to “hold your book in your hand,” you’re costing yourself money. If you have a venue where you can sell them yourself (speaking engagements, indie bookstores, etc.), you’ll make a tidy profit.

But otherwise, for copies sold through Extended Distribution and normal channels, you’ll make about $2 in royalties (about 10%) per copy sold.

Your ebook, on the other hand, will earn you a whopping 70-80% of the list price, depending on the venue.

The paper edition of one of my books sells for $15.99. For every paper copy that sells, I earn about $2.

The ebook edition of the same book costs $4.99, a much more attractive price. For every ebook copy that sells, I earn between $3.50 and $4.00.

In the same email, my friend asked whether he has to send a “hard copy” to the Library of Congress. He said “I know at one time all publishers, including self publishers had to do this.”

Again, no. And no, they weren’t. Nor do you need an LCCN (Library of Congress Catalogue Number).

The LCCN, which by my estimate 99.83652987% of novice authors/publishers fret over, doesn’t even ensure that your work is in the actual Library of Congress.

Most novice writers, from what I’ve been able to discern, believe they either “have” to have an LCCN or that having one will somehow cause their work to be enshrined in the Library of Congress. Neither case is true.

Requesting and purchasing (yep, it costs money) an LCCN only ensures a listing in their catalogue, which again does absolutely nothing to benefit the author or the work.

For questions on copyright, see the US Copyright Office at http://www.copyright.gov/.

Today, and Writing

Got up late this morning (for me) at around 4 and spent the first couple hours doing nothing much. Normal email and FB and the topic above.

Didn’t find a June story to run with, so I knocked out a couple thousand words on a new story. Breaking about 9 to do a little yard work (mowing) on the part that’s dry.

Finished with the yard (it’s probably an acre but mows like 5 acres) in a little over an hour. Now to finish the short story for today. Then I think I’m gonna take some time off to watch baseball. (grin)

Well, the game starts at 11. So I’ll get a shower, watch the game and finish the story later today.

Well, I went back to the story for awhile, but it seems to want to be either a long short story or maybe a novella. We’ll see.

Back tomorrow.
