The Journal, Saturday, 7/29

Hey Folks,

Well, the good new is, the intensive will go. We have four hearty souls signed up. There are four slots left. If anyone else wants in and you’re local, email me. (Please don’t fly in, etc. No need. If this goes as well as I expect, I’ll put it on audio later and make it available for sale to the public at something of a discount.)

I went to bed and read for about an hour last night (Raymond Chandler stuff, of Philip Marlowe fame). Then some moron got his vehicle stuck on the dirt road that leads to the highway.

He revved and revved and revved and revved etc. ad nauseam because, apparently, that’s all he knew to do. When that surprisingly didn’t automatically levitate him out of the mud, he laid on his horn several times.

Someone eventually pulled the guy out, but only after the kid (I assume) wore the rubber off all four tires and stressed his engine trying to throw mud from here to Deming, New Mexico.

This is in the midst of a fairly heavy rain during which we got almost a half-inch in about an hour.

In the midst of the same rain, the city fathers or mothers or whatever of St. David decided it would be the perfect night to set off July 4th fireworks. Yeah. Twenty-four days late, at around 8 p.m. in a driving rain.

Of course, all of that got me out of bed. I was annoyed. So here I am. Finally to bed around 11.

Today, and Writing

Got up a little late this morning. Mona had to drive back to Sierra Vista but I opted to stay here. Did a little of what all guys do when we’re left to our own devices — yard work — then came in to cool off.

Around 11 I started back on the novel. One more major mess to straighten out from a new twist the characters tossed at me while I was on the road.

But I’m also in the area where the novel will end. Probably another 6000 to 8000 words or so.

It dawns on me, this will be either my 26th novel or my 5th novella. Weird.

I worked through the final (so far) big twist. It took a couple of hours, but it worked out much more quickly and smoothly than I expected. That was a relief. Finally I got to write some brand new stuff. (grin)

But not a lot. Eyes gave out.

Back tomorrow.
