The Journal, Tuesday, January 2

Hey Folks,

Well, my goals remain the same (on average, 2500 words of new fiction per day), but I’ve become all right about not writing for a day or two now and then.

Part of that is a result of looking back on what I’ve done. I’m not willing to rest on my accomplishments, but I’m comfortable with them. So now it’s okay to set and reset my priorities.

Due to several factors in my life, on most days writing is still Priority One. But on days when my wife is here or family members are visiting or I’m heading out for fun with my friend, writing slips to Priority Two.

There is no Priority Three. Or rather, everything else is lumped together in that level.

Back to referencing Dean today with a short but very important post. See “Of Interest” below. I was pleased to find that my mental attitude on the topic runs pretty much parallel with his.

My next goal will be to accept, without coming unhinged, that it’s all right to not write at all for a week or two or three.

We’ll see on that one. My recent layoff still feels as if it lasted for years. In reality, my last major publication (a novel) was on October 13.

The new book is going well. In a half-hour first session this morning I added almost 600 words to the beginning of The Origin Novel.

I’ve noticed too since I returned to using my dedicated writing ‘puter, where I write doesn’t make as much difference as writing on the same computer. Odd, but very cool.

Yesterday and today, I wrote in the Hovel, in my office (both my big desk and my little desk) and at my outside desk.

No matter where I was, the words seemed to flow. Of course, that’s while I’m here by myself. When others are around (if I’m writing) I’ll probably hold myself to my outside desk or the Hovel.

Still, it’s a pretty cool discovery.

Okay, in a few other sessions, I’ve added over 2600 words to the novel so far today.

I’m out for a walk now, then maybe back to it.

Back from the walk a little after 2:30, and I’m not going to push it. I made my daily count, so that’s enough. I know this one’s going to take awhile, plus I’m still cycling, so it’s all good.

Back soon.
