The Journal, Saturday, March 10

Hey Folks,

Well, I wasn’t really expecting to write today. But as it happens, I started my next novel. Makes me feel kind’a good.

Now that I established who Stern Talbot is in the one I just published, I was thinking of writing a series of those. Not right now, of course.

You know. Stern Talbot, P.I.: The Case of the ….

This morning I went out to the Hovel, ostensibly to write, but I fully expected to spend an hour or so doing little or nothing. Maybe looking over some old story starts and seeing whether anything grabbed my interest.

For example, I really want to write the novelization of “Going Back” (The Age Exchange). I started that last month, but it fizzled.

This morning I realized it fizzled because, at this point, it was about one event and had only one POV. In other words, it was perfect for a short story, but not so much for a novel. At least not yet.

Anyway, I stumbled across a cover photo I’ve saved for awhile. As soon as I glanced at it, a line sprang into my head. I opened a new Word doc, typed that line, and it kept running. Pure writing into the dark.

It will be Pulp 7, a look back to when our hero was still a detective with the force. The title will be Stern Talbot, P.I.—The Early Years: The Case of the Sliced-Up Secretary. (grin)

In one long session, interrupted only by a brief break for nature, I put down around 1500 words before around 9:30. Then up to the house to hit the PO, publish Mona’s memoir and do some other stuff.

Now it’s noon-thirty and I’m headed back to the novel. See you later.

Well, this time I spent an hour and a half in the Hovel. And (go figure), the first half-hour I spent playing cards. But then I started on the novel again. It’s ripping right along.

See you tomorrow.
