A Virtual Tour of The Daily Journal Website

In yesterday’s post I mentioned that I’ve been writing for ten years and listed some of my accomplishments in that time, including averaging 9 novels per year.

That isn’t exactly true. There were two years of little or no fiction writing during those ten years. I actually wrote during only 8 of those years.

So my average is actually just below 12 novels per year, more than one novella per year, and over 31 short stories per year.

That, combined with the fact that all of my newsletters are distributed via Substack, caused me to realize I seldom even mention The Daily Journal website.

So today I thought I’d give you a virtual tour. To follow along, key in or click https://hestanbrough.com. I suggest you open it in a separate window.

That’s me in the upper left corner, sitting with my laptop and working on a short story or novel during a camping trip in the Lower Gila Box Wilderness. (Photo courtesy of Dan Baldwin.)

Okay, now let’s get substantive.

The landing page—

features ten of my latest blog posts. You can view them right here on the site. At the bottom of the page, you can scroll through more pages: 225 of them.

If you’re looking for a particular post, it’s much easier to find it here than to search archives on Substack. Or you can use the Search box in the sidebar to search for all the posts on a particular topic.

Many posts are open to everyone. If you encounter a post that says “Protected” and requires a password—and if you’re a subscriber—email me and I’ll send you the password.

The Menu—

contains a subscription link and eleven other links to pages on the site. You can view those for yourself.

The two items with a down arrow beside them each have two other menu items below them.

Gifts & Archives—

contains links to interesting articles and posts. The last link “More Free Stuff” will take you to a wealth of information for writers on my author site.

This page also contains links to all the Journal Archives to date, from “2014/15” up through 2023. I’ll post the archives from 2024 sometime in January.

Clicking any link in the archives will cause a free, searchable PDF document to download to your computer or phone. When you open it, you will find a wealth of information.

The “Also…” section includes several more links. Each is self-explanatory. Some will take you to other pages. The last will download a free PDF document.

Free MS Word for Writers—

is a menu tab below the Gifts & Archives tab.

This menu tab will take you to a page on my author site. On that page you’ll find an introduction and then links to all the posts in my MS Word for Writers series. Many writers have found those posts invaluable.

The other tab under Gifts & Archives is my Comments Policy. It’s—er, shall we say blunt? It was great fun to write. I hope you’ll check it out.

Writing Books—

Click this menu tab and you’ll find you’re at my publisher site. The book covers in the top three rows will lead you to the individual book page, a description of the book, and the opportunity to purchase it for a discount.

The covers in the bottom two rows clickable links that will download the free PDF version of that book to your computer. Lot of good information there. And it’s free.

Audio Courses—

is a menu tab below the Writing Books tab.

The Audio Courses page offers in-depth descriptions of the seven audio courses I still offer. They are well worth the price.

Scroll down and you’ll also find the courses I no longer offer and why I no longer offer them. That’s followed with a few of the hundreds of kudos I’ve been fortunate enough to garner over the years.

Paper Books and DVDs—

is also a menu tab below the Writing Books tab.

It lists the two writing books for which I have paper copies available. The prices are lower than you’ll find on ebay, the books are new, and shipping is included in the price.

It also lists the Video Seminars Available on DVD.

I won’t be making copies of these. I have one copy each of two 3-hour seminars and two copies each of two others.

To Write Fiction—

is a short essay that tells you exactly how to write fiction. It’s followed with links to downloadable PDF essays by me and others including JA Konrath, Frank Theodat, and Erle Stanley Gardner.

Critiques—

This page is all about my offer to critique the opening of your story or novel, including requirements, what I look for. I offer this service year-round.

“Depending on your current skill level, this offer will almost certainly leap your writing forward.”

If I feel a copyedit is warranted and that you might learn from it, I throw that in free of charge.

In a world in which most good copyeditors charge upward of 2 cents per word, this is a great deal. Check it out.

Copyediting—

This page contains a frank discussion of my offer to copyedit your work. Unlike openings critiques, my copyediting service is not always available.

I’m an excellent copyeditor, but I’m a fiction writer first.

After you’ve read the information on the page, if you’re interested, email me at harveystanbrough@gmail.com.

My Bio—

I always advise other writers to check out the authors of fiction and nonfiction books before blindly taking their advice.

Offering this bio is my way of holding myself to that same standard.

That’s it. The last menu item is only a donation link. It will lead you to PayPal, where you can donate any amount. If your donation is more than $5 per month or $60 per year, I’ll add you to the subscribers’ list.

If you found this tour useful, let me know. Maybe I’ll offer a virtual tour of my author website sometime as well. There’s also a wealth of information there for writers.

A Final Note: I’m thinking of opening up mentorships again. If you’re interested in a month-by-month mentorship with me, email me with your topic(s) of interest at harveystanbrough@gmail.com.

Talk with you again soon.

Disclaimer: I am a prolific professional fiction writer, but please try this at home. You can do it. On this blog I teach Writing Into the Dark and adherence to Heinlein’s Rules. Unreasoning fear and the myths of writing are lies. They will slow your progress as a writer or stop you cold. I will never teach the myths on this blog.
