Hey Folks, Our second snowfall of the year (yes, here in the desert) started this morning. Creating, of course, the illusion that the world has shifted on its axis and it’s going to snow every day during 2019. (grin) This is a “real” snow, with about 4″ on the ground at the moment and plenty more coming. My wife’s considering granting herself a 2-hour delay if she goes in at all. Fortunately, my own commute to the office is only about 200 feet outside my back door. (grin) *** We have one little hummingbird who stays with us year-round. He … Read more

Hey Folks, If you’re part of Draft2Digital, yesterday you received a very nice Christmas poem from them. I always find it interesting when a company does something they don’t “have” to do. D2D didn’t have to send out that holiday greeting. After all, it went out (at least via email) only to those who are already signed up. It isn’t even on their blog. To see the poem, click This Link. D2D is a vibrant young innovative distribution company, still at the stage where they actually care about writers. If you aren’t using D2D yet, I hope you’ll jump on … Read more

Hey Folks, My new all-time favorite quote: “The faster I write, the better my output. If I’m going slow, I’m in trouble. It means I’m pushing the words instead of being pulled by them.” ~ Raymond Chandler Hey, even if you don’t believe me or Dean, you have to believe Raymond Chandler, don’t you? The above is not because Raymond Chandler was an experienced fictionist who knew all the “tricks.” (There are none.) It’s because he learned to trust his subconscious and allow the characters to tell the story. After all, they’re the ones who are living it. (grin) To … Read more

Hey Folks, I’m a very lucky guy. The first reader for my Nick Spalding series sent me an email last night. (I got it this morning.) While reading back through Nightfall (Book 1) she noticed I’d misspelled “cannon” as “canon.” In her email, she sounded as if she were hyperventilating. (grin, but great catch, Nan) So when I emailed her back this morning, basically I just told her typos happen (yes, even in books published by the “Big 5”) and to not worry about it. It was an easy fix. Then, because the typo occurred in the first few pages … Read more

Hey Folks, Welcome to a new member, Ilsa from Germany. And welcome to all other recent members. Glad you could join us. Some great stuff in “Of Interest” today, and that’s the main reason I’m even posting this entry. It would behoove you to click through. I’m focused on other things today, so no fiction writing again this morning, and probably none this afternoon. If I do write this afternoon, I’ll report it tomorrow. Talk with you again soon. Of Interest See “New Fiction River Kickstarter Award for Writers” at https://www.deanwesleysmith.com/new-fiction-river-kickstarter-award-for-writers/. This is a good one, folks. Don’t miss it! … Read more

Hey Folks, Very long but very informative post today. I hope you’ll get your favorite beverage and hang in there. Wow. According to a staff member at Reedsy, “The New York Times recently reported that short stories are ‘experiencing a resurgence’ with both readers and critics alike. In 2017, sales of short story collections shot up almost 50% over the previous year. In the past five years, three of the most prestigious prizes in fiction — the Booker, the Nobel, and the Folio — were awarded to writers best known for their short stories. “In other words: the short story … Read more

Hey Folks, A little rambling today… This morning I rolled out closer to the time normal human beings get up. That might become the routine since the sun’s coming up earlier now. Doing so enables me to ease my way into the day, spend some time with my wife in the morning and evening, and gives me more of a normal workday. This is me trying to rationalize staying up later at night and getting up later in the morning. But it seems worthwhile, at least so far. We got rid of regular TV programming and the $100+ per month … Read more

Hey Folks, Well, another slow start to the day. And chances are I’ll have only a half-day today. I meant to rise early (2-3) and get straight out to the Hovel and the novel. Uh, but that ain’t what happened. I decided to skip my waking-up ritual, so as it turned out I just sat and stared at my writing ‘puter for awhile. Didn’t even read over what I’d written yesterday, which is my usually start on the writing day. So back up to the house for a bit to write this, check things around the web, etc. When I … Read more

Hey Folks, Well, five are signed up for the writing intensive now. Three slots left, and one more would-be attendee is thinking about it. Today I’ll endeavor to finish my July novel. (grin) Whenever I finish, I’ll have 8 novels or novellas at the beginning of the 8th month of the year. With my annual goal of 15 novels or novellas on the year, I’m going to plan to write two novels per month for August, September and October. Absolutely no reason I shouldn’t be able to do that. During August also I’m prepping for and teaching the intensive, and … Read more

Hey Folks, If you aren’t distributing through Draft2Digital.com (D2D) yet, here’s another reason to do so. I received an email this morning saying D2D has partnered with Findaway Voices to provide audio books starting, actually, today. To read about this innovation, visit https://draft2digital.com/blog/d2d-partners-with-findaway-voices-to-provide-an-alternative-to-acx-starting-7182017/. Of special note, if you use Findaway Voices via D2D, the former even waives their normal $49 admin fee. Worth checking out. Best of all, it gives readers one more way to find your work, and it gives you one more trickling stream of income. Today, and Writing I did little or nothing but reading and researching … Read more
