The Journal, Monday, October 1

Hey Folks, Wow. For me, September both flew by and slowly slipped through my fingers. I allowed my WIP, the third novel in my Nick Spalding series, to languish on the back burner while I recuperated and worked on a copyedit for a gentleman. But as October dawns, everything’s wrapping up nicely. The symptoms of my cold are mostly gone and I’ve recovered fully from the initial medical stuff. Just in time for Part 2, really, but it shouldn’t be nearly as big a deal. For one thing, this time it’s an outpatient procedure in a surgery center (not a … Read more

Hey Folks, Well, I’m headed back to see the cardio-electrician today. We’ll head that way around 11 or so. Before that, I’ll work on the edit some more, but there are a few good things in “Of Interest” so I wanted to be sure to get this out there. Hence the early post. Talk with you again soon. Of Interest See “Sleeping Secrets” at http://www.thepassivevoice.com/sleeping-secrets/. With a promo like that, I bought the book. The Journal, Thursday, September 20

Hey Folks, A great “Of Interest” section today (playing catch up), but first some personal stuff, though it is related to writing, or in this case, not writing. So sorry about missing yesterday. I missed writing not only this Journal but fiction for a day too. My “streak” ended at 4 days. Today it’s back to 1. (grin) Here’s the rundown on the past couple of days: As you know, we went to Tucson on Tuesday for what we believed was an out-patient procedure. We expected to depart Tucson around 5 p.m. Then the following morning, I would resume my … Read more

The Journal, Sunday, September 16

Hey Folks, Not a lot to talk about today unless something occurs to me later. For now, I’ve browsed the Internet, didn’t find much, and am going to write for awhile. Which spurred this thought: Once again, I’m setting a goal to write fiction every day. This self-discipline is nothing more than a trick to get me to the keyboard once a day, every day, and I’m stubborn enough to make it work. My life is not one in which I have tons of responsiblity. Been there, done that. But now, I don’t have a day job, I don’t report … Read more

The Journal, Monday, September 10

Hey Folks, First (so I don’t forget), I have a late-morning appointment in Tucson tomorrow, so there might not be a Journal entry. The place is a couple hours away, so it blows a lot of the day. Of course, I’m planning for it. I expect to get up early and write early, then make the rounds of the Internet afterward and file the Journal entry. We’ll see. *** Saw an ad for a “writers retreat” for which registration is about to close. The cost is $40 to “hold your spot” and then an unadvertised amount due by the end … Read more

The Journal, Monday, September 3

Hey Folks, Happy Labor Day. I wrote a whole long post yesterday, mostly whining about Heinlein’s Rule 4. Then I forgot to post it until about 5:30, and of course by then it was too late. Well, that’s why I call it an “almost daily” Journal. I counted yesterday’s nonfiction words (530) in my writing, but I won’t make you suffer through it. I consider myself an adherent to Heinlein’s Rules, yet lately I slip and fall when I approach Rule 4. In brief… 1, 2, and 3 — I write, I finish what I write, and I don’t rewrite. … Read more

The Journal, Sunday, August 26

Hey Folks, As I expected, no fiction writing yesterday. If I write today, I’ll report it on Monday. I received feedback on my previous novel from my first reader yesterday, and this morning I applied that feedback and (I hope) enlisted her aid as the first reader for the one I’m working on now. (grin) Now I just have to come up with a couple of titles. One for Nick Spalding 2 (the one I finished) and another for Nick Spalding 1 (the WIP). In the meantime, here’s Part 2 of the topic I started yesterday. (You can see Part … Read more

The Journal, Friday, August 24

Hey Folks, Well, if you publish your books to print, don’t miss “Of Interest” today. Extremely important news. It’s been awhile since I stopped taking my books to print, so I was behind the curve on this one. Please spread the news to any other writers or writers groups you know of. *** Out to the Hovel a little late. I got a two short, disjointed sessions done, then one good third session and wound up with just over 2000 words of fiction on the day. But I’m feeling a little under the weather so I’ll cut my losses and … Read more

The Journal, Thursday, August 23

Hey Folks, If you own your own hosted website, this will be of interest to you. It’s important enough that I’m putting off my own writing to report. Below in “Of Interest,” Kris Rusch talks about problems with a particular web host. Having had similar experiences with that web host, I concur. So I’m searching for a new web host. The first lesson is not to believe everything you read online, at least at first glance. For example, I clicked a link that offered the “Top 15 Web Hosts.” But when the page came up it listed only 7 hosts, … Read more

The Journal, Tuesday, August 21

Hey Folks, A lot in “Of Interest” today from the somewhat sublime to the outright silly. Enjoy. The plan for today was to get to the Hovel early to begin writing New Words on my WIP. Yesterday I got out there a little late and still had some cycling to do, so I ran out of time before I had to return to the copyedit. For various reasons, I didn’t get out there early. When I do get back (some time or other, and I hope it’s today) I’ll roll straight off the edge into the trenches of the story … Read more
