D2D Paper Price Increase

I’ve been sitting on this for awhile, unintentionally. Frankly I’d forgotten about it. And I’m putting it out there today mostly to justify sharing the items in “Of Interest” with you.

Anyway, if you publish (distribute) through Draft2Digital, and if you’re signed up to get their newsletter, you already know this. But just in case you don’t, D2D is adjusting what they call their “print price,” by which they mean their paper-publication price.

D2D writes, “For two years we’ve been able to maintain the current cost of printing, thanks to you—the authors who have tested D2D Print, and ordered proofs and author copies. But as we’ve improved and made the service better, it’s become necessary to make some adjustments. One of those is a slight increase to the cost of author and proof copies. [So] effective November 1, 2021, the cost of author copies and proof copies via D2D Print will increase. …

“To help you compare our current printing unit costs and the rates that will go into effect on November 1st, you can take a look at our Print Copy Calculator.”

(On a grouchy personal note, I really wish people would stop referring to physical paper copies as “print” copies, as if books that are delivered in digital format are not printed. The former are printed on paper, and the latter are printed on the screen of whatever device the reader is using.)

Anyway, the cost of author copies for paper books at D2D will go up while the author royalties per copy will go down, per this visual:

That plus the supply chain interruption (which I predict will continue until it’s yet one more part of the “new normal”) combine to create one more reason to justify my laziness when it comes to taking my books to paper.

Talk with you again later.

Disclaimer: In this blog, I provide advice on writing fiction. I advocate a technique called Writing Into the Dark. To be crystal clear, WITD is not “the only way” to write, nor will I ever say it is. However, as I am the only writer who advocates WITD both publicly and regularly, I will continue to do so, among myriad other topics.
