The Journal, Monday, December 10

Hey Folks,

I had an interesting question re the new Gutenberg “blocks” that WordPress shoved upon us recently. The long and short of it is this:

If your website is hosted on WordPress.COM, you have to pay extra to be able to add plugins to your website. That’s one of the things I don’t like about WordPress.com. It’s “free,” and then they nickle and dime you to death. Same with a lot of the other so-called free providers.

ALSO and more importantly, if your site is hosted on any of those, be absolutely certain to read the terms of service. Closely. On many of them (including WordPress.com) THEY, not You, own the content that’s on your website.

If you have a self-hosted website powered by WordPress.ORG on a webhosting provider (I use JustHost, but there are a ton of them out there), YOU own all content.

Just sayin’.

And if any of you need help switching your site over (or building one in the first place), please let me know. I can help, and I’m a LOT less expensive than you can get anywhere else.

Well, it’s a mixed-blessing day. My wife just took off with her sisters to visit the Grand Canyon (in the dead of winter yet: groan). So I have a few days during which I can write and shop, watch all my favorite TV shows, etc.

I wrote for only a little over an hour this morning, then went up to the house to spend time with my wife before her sisters showed up.

Then there was the hour-long last-minute frenzy that always happens no matter how well you pack or plan. And finally they were off.

Soon after that I went to the grocery to get a few things I missed yesterday. Then I realized I had to gas up my truck. Then the post office, and by the time I got home, it was almost noon.

Then I decided to write this stuff, file this edition of the Journal, and take the rest of the day to do nothing but spend it with the babies. They all find it a bit odd that their mom isn’t here.

Tomorrow I hope to get a good run at my WIP.

Talk with you again soon.
