The Journal, Monday, June 4

Hey Folks,

Wow. Nothing but whole lot of nothing going on yesterday in a writerly way. Did a little work around the yard, did some reading, but very little else.

My business computer was all messed up (the last Lenovo I’ll ever buy) so I spent a few hours messing with it. Finally got it working again, or at least limping along.

I did spend a little time online finding things for “Of Interest” and they’re below. Nothing time sensitive, so I figured it would keep until today.

Hence no Journal yesterday.

I stayed up too late on Sunday night, rolled out late as a result this morning, then allowed myself to be sucked into a meaningless discussion (in dumbed-down America) concerning ignorance and all its seemingly endless ramifications. Sigh.

Still managed a walk, though we just went into the open desert east of the house and walked around the 1 mile, uneven dirt path out there. Hurt my back, so I won’t be doing that again.

When we got back I got to work, which means I started poking through the usual websites looking for items for the “Of Interest” section. Found a couple and added them.

Then I opened a game of spider solitaire and tried very hard to forget I’d wasted over an hour earlier in the day on a person who probably wouldn’t give me the time of day if her middle finger was a watch. Ahh, the wonders of Facebook.

Then I came inside to write all this gibberish. Finally to the Hovel around 10.

***

I had three really good sessions today and knocked out over 3800 words. Feels good to be working my way back into a routine.

See you soon.

There are 16 more comments on Dean’s “Many Deaths” post at https://www.deanwesleysmith.com/the-many-deaths-of-a-fiction-writer/#comments. Many good, meaty comments there. Also, often I find new “resources” by clicking the linked name of a commenter. Few and far between, but they’re out there.

See James Scott Bell’s “Be Clear About WHO and WHERE in the Opening” at https://killzoneblog.com/2018/06/be-clear-about-who-and-where-in-the-opening.html. I would add, also be clear about the What. It doesn’t have to be “the” problem of the story/novel, but every opening should have a character with a problem (the what) in a setting.
