The Journal, Tuesday, June 19

Hey Folks, Wow. Not posting on Sunday was intentional, but yesterday just slipped away from me. Had a good day on the edit yesterday. This morning I have to do a little real work, moving back a section of barbed-wire fence. Then a walk. Then back to the copyedit. Topic: Safeguard Your Credibility, Part 3 A long while back, in two parts, I published a post titled Safeguard Your Credibility. If you missed those, Here’s the Original Post and Here’s Part Two. Both posts were all about not displaying ignorance. Yet the only way to avoid displaying ignorance is to … Read more

The Journal, Saturday, June 16

Hey Folks, I’ve gotten in the almost-habit of turning out one long story per month, novel or novella. I don’t have a firm goal in that direction. It just sort of happens. That hybrid-novel-wrapped-around-ten-short-stories I wrote last month kind of screwed me up, I think. The process was so back-and-forth, so unintuitive, it addled my widdle bwain. Even my subconscious is reeling. But excuses aside, if I want to stay even close to turning out a long story every month, I need to get back on the stick. I have another Stern Talbot P.I. story in mind. Those usually come … Read more

The Journal, Friday, June 15

Hey Folks, Just thought I’d mention, I emailed Dean Wesley Smith a few days ago for advice re something I was considering. He responded right away, and his comments were very helpful. So I sent back a thank you and didn’t expect to hear from him again. After all, he’s smack in the middle of a huge cross-country move. He’s moving out of a 9-bedroom house on the Oregon coast and into a much smaller condo in Las Vegas. So he’s been packing all the stuff in Lincoln City, moved one truckload to Vegas, and several more truckloads to various … Read more

The Journal, Thursday, June 14

Hey Folks, Well, I think I’m taking off a few days. I just had a new copyedit come in, so I’m going to work on that. In the meantime, D.R.E.A.D. can rest while I decide whether to shoot it or hook it up to a resuscitation machine. When I return to it, probably I’ll backtrack to see whether I can find where it took a wrong turn. I’ve done that once already and didn’t see a place where it went wrong, so maybe I’ll have to set it aside for awhile and move on to something else. Hey, stuff happens. … Read more

The Journal, Wednesday, June 13

Hey Folks, Okay, the light of a new day. First, I’m not going to start a monthly magazine. At least not in fhe foreseeable future. To do so would make a LOT more work for me (layout, a cover, the intricies of adding scalable covers for the stories and novels inside the magazine) and would give me only a hyper-minimal return on investment. Plus the time investment would be massive and ongoing. So I’m not going to do it. Still, I’m glad the possibility was part of yesterday’s thought process. It’s been a long time since a stream of such … Read more

The Journal, Tuesday, June 12

Hey Folks, I almost didn’t post a Journal entry today. Nothing in “Of Interest” today, and I didn’t write any new fiction. But I wanted to share with you. Wow. What a great day! Already! (It’s about noon as I write this.) It isn’t a great day writing-wise, at least not yet. And if it ends either way, that’ll be fine too. But it’s a great day in the realm of serendipity. Now understand, I’m in the middle (well, the first quarter or third) of a novel. The D.R.E.A.D. thing. Only I already know I’m going to change one character … Read more

The Journal, Monday, June 11

Hey Folks, I hope you all read the Journal from yesterday. It might be the most informative one I’ve written. If you missed it, you can find it at http://hestanbrough.com/the-journal-sunday-june-10/. One thing I mentioned yesterday is “Style follows story, not the other way around.” If your stylistic choices call attention to themselves, change them back. For example, the poet E.E. Cummings is as well known for writing in all lower case as much or more so than he is known for his poetry itself. For another, many writers have asked me why they should have to set off dialogue with … Read more

The Journal, Sunday, June 10

Hey Folks, If you’re a writer, you don’t want to miss this post. Yesterday, I rolled out at 3 for a change. Felt good. I used the early morning for admin time. I was led to that by a good review of my 10-story collection Mobster Tales that I received via email yesterday. When I went to add the review to the page for that book over at StoneThread Publishing, I realized I hadn’t yet created a page for that book. So I did that, then pasted the review in. You can see it at http://stonethreadpublishing.com/mobster-tales/. Then the day fell … Read more

The Journal, Friday, June 8

Hey Folks, This will almost be a topic on websites and what to do with them. Welcome to new subscribers. In this golden era of indy publishing, there are no limits. You can have complete control of your writing career. IF you’ve managed to avoid the hordes of traditional and vanity publishers out there who only want to take your money. But it does take a little work. It’s important to have an author website, a place where fans can visit to learn about you and what you’re doing. It’s also important, especially as you write more stories and novels … Read more

The Journal, Thursday, June 7

Hey Folks, Well, it’s Thursday. That means I have a half-day. My wife and I decided we’d take one day off per week from walking, and we decided Thursday would be that day. That way I can start writing early and go straight through (with short breaks) instead of using an hour of that time for a walk. *** Still adjusting my way of doing things. I was determined to get up early this morning. But with the sun coming up earlier and going down later, it’s more difficult to go to bed earlier. And since we got rid of … Read more
