The Journal, Friday, April 27

Hey Folks,

Well, when I started the current WIP, I thought I might finish it by the end of the month. The numbers added up about right. But it wasn’t so much a goal as something I thought I would probably do. Now I don’t think that’s going to happen.

I had a couple of nights under the weather with very little sleep, and then a minor life roll reared it’s ugly attitude yesterday. So my production’s dropped.

I had a light writing day yesterday, and another one today. I’m so emotionally and mentally spent that I decided not to force it.

Oh, I came out to the Hovel and gave the story a little nudge, but a good writing day just wasn’t in the cards.

Tomorrow and the next day are Saturday and Sunday, typically light days at best. Plus I’m expecting a visit from a friend tomorrow and then another one from another friend sometime in the coming week.

Of course, all of that’s fine. The WIP will be there when I get back to it, and there are at least two more (maybe three) waiting in the wings. (One of the stories I wrote for this WIP wants to be a novel.)

When I started this novel/collection, I planned to write maybe 10 stories and 11 Intermissions. That would include the prologue to open the novel, an epilogue to wrap it, and an Intermission during which the storyline would return to the novel between every pair of short stories.

I was also thinking my “normal” short story is around 3,000 words. So with 10 stories at about 3000 words each and 11 intermissions totalling another 25-30,000 words, I figured this would wrap at 55,000 to 60,000 words.

But if I let it be what it wants to be, it’s going to be a long one. Two of the three stories I’ve written thus far are 7,000 words each, and the other one is over 4,000 words.

When the writing’s going well and Life leaves me alone, I’m knocking out one short story and two Intermissions every two days.

So I’m no longer even thinking about the end of the month as a target finishing date. I’m just going to let this thing run until it stops. Or until I have 10 stories. Whichever comes first.

See you tomorrow.
