The Journal, Friday, November 16

Hey Folks,

Well, another tidbit on traditional publishing. In the fourth item in “Of Interest” today, two crime novelists are chatting (like a mutual interview).

Early in that exchange, one says, “Both of us started writing our books after the 2016 election. This fall is really the first season when novels written after the election will be released….”

Wow. Two years. From November 2016 through the present they were each writing one novel and waiting for it to come out.

In that same amount of time, I wrote and published 16 novels, 4 novellas, and 23 short stories. The last three novels will be released later this month and in December and January. Just sayin’….

I like to plan ahead a little too. I don’t know what I’ll write next, or whether I’ll start anything new today.

I know what I want. I’d like to skip Nick and Marie ahead in time a little and write Nick 5. But for each of those books, the first line just happened. It came to me, I wrote it down, and didn’t look back.

Then again, I don’t really want to wait until that first line occurs to me to continue writing. I could easily lay off until the Monday after Thanksgiving but that’s far too long for me.

So I hope I’ll write today, through the weekend and up through next Wednesday. That will enable me to drop a few new short stories or get a good start on my next novel or novella.

We’ll see. Maybe I’ll reread Nick 1 – 4 today and see whether something pops out at me. If I’m able to put down even an opening today, I’ll be happy with that.

For now, it’s almost 8 so I’ll head up to the house for a break. Back to the Hovel at 9.

After poking around awhile, I decided to do a redraft of an idea I had a month or two ago. The idea hasn’t let go yet. That’s a very good sign.

In four sessions, I wrote a little over 3700 words. A great start. Of course, a lot of the stuff was already in my head. I liked the title and the character names, so I retained those.

Talk with you again soon.

See “56 Best Writing Websites of 2018” at https://blog.reedsy.com/best-writing-websites-2018/. I do not vouch for these. I haven’t vetted them, though I plan to look them over in coming days. If you find something of value, good. Please just beware of myths, and advice to keep doing the same old things that haven’t worked before.
