The Journal, Thursday, October 18

Hey Folks,

Watched an excellent baseball game last night and stayed up late (for me) to do so. I seldom watch baseball on TV through the season, but I almost always watch the division and league series and then the world series.

I’m of the generation that remembers games being played only in the daytime, teachers allowing us to listen to the radio broadcast during class, etc. (grin)

I’m old enough to remember men asking other men (as a test of their manhood) whether they knew who won the previous world series. I’m glad the custom didn’t persist; my memory isn’t all that. The question was allegedly even used during World War II to determine whether a new guy in the unit was possibly a spy.

Baseball is part of American Culture, which has been of great interest to me of late. Probably because so many proponents of open borders proclaim so loudly that Americans as a whole have no unique culture.

Of course, that’s silly. Our culture, like that of every other nation on Earth, is a great blending of cultures from around the world. And nowhere is that blending more apparent or more openly on display than in baseball. Long live the game.

I actually got out to the Hovel early this morning, a little after 6, a little before sunrise. That’s the joy of the Hovel. When the outside temp hovers around 40°, it’s a toasty 65° inside the Hovel. (grin)

This weekend, I’m going to enlist my wife to help me rearrange my Hovel office, though. I not only write “into” the dark, but “in” the dark, and currently there’s a window directly above my writing desk. The light blinds me and after a short time my eyes get fuzzy.

In a darker setting, I can lower the display intensity from 100% to around 50%. My eyes do better and I can spend longer with my fictional friends.

I wrote all of the above, then started on the WIP again at 6:30.

About 900 words later, I headed up to the house for breakfast and a shower.

Back to the Hovel at 8:30. Another 900 words, then to the house for a break.

While I was there, I remembered I received a request yesterday for a free critique of the first 500 words. I meant to do it earlier this morning. Oops. (grin) So I did that, then went back to the Hovel and the WIP at 10:30.

Only a half-day today, but I’m wearing thin anyway.

Talk with you again soon.
