The Journal, Tuesday, September 18

Hey Folks,

Welcome to new subscriber Dianne. Glad you’re aboard. I hope you get something of value out of the journal.

The Journal apparently is a well-kept secret. That makes the subscribers a kind of elite group. Each of you is one of only 56 folks who currently enjoy these private glimpses and “Of Interest” tidbits. (grin)

I’m very glad you’re out there. And it isn’t all one-sided. Thanks to subscriber Céline who this very morning gave me some invaluable advice re naming conventions in France, where my WIP is set.

I received an email from another friend noting new “rules for provisional balls” in golf. For those interested, here’s the link: http://www.golfwrx.com/525564/rules-explainer-will-there-really-be-no-more-provisional-balls-in-2019/.

My response? Well, first, a disclaimer. I don’t play golf, so…

“Wow. Much ado about nothing, eh? If they played with low-impact grenades, wouldn’t that be interesting? Pull the pin, tee off, the ball soars, and… wham!”

Of course, that would probably create a headache for the groundskeeper.

Irreverent? Probably. Shrug. I dunno (or IDK for the younger set). Maybe not. I’ve noticed golfers generally have a good sense of humor. But then, they would have to, wouldn’t they? (I know. Irreverence again.)

A Couple of Notes About Today’s “Of Interest”…

I listed “Heil Safari” because the critiquer, Debbie Burke, offers some GREAT general advice for writers. Basically, “get inside the character’s skin” and “use all five senses.” Read it. You’ll see what I mean.

And I re-listed Kris Rusch’s “Free Fiction Monday: Dix” because I thought it might have gotten lost in the flurry of items yesterday. At just under 20,000 words, this is a novella. And Kristine Kathryn Rusch, to my mind, is America’s premier storyteller. Enjoy.

Also, in a newsletter from Kris, “The first novel in my Smokey Dalton series published under the name Kris Nelscott is free in ebook.” Click https://books2read.com/u/bzPAVG and pick your favorite vendor. I’m sure this is a limited-time offer.

I’m glad i decided to write fiction every day. In addition to creating a streak and adding to my productivity, it creates an excellent diversion from life things.

I’ll post this a little early today, probably well before noon as I have to spend the afternoon in Tucson undergoing a medical test. And dang it, wouldn’t you know I forgot to study. I’m slso fasting All. Day. Long. today so if this seems a little more whacked out than usual, we’ll blame the fasting. (grin)

The test is no real biggie, but frankly I’d rather have my fingernails pulled out, slowly, with a pair of pliers. Especially if the deed to a beach house in Ecuador was waiting at the other end of the whole nail-pulling episode. (grin)

Alas, the only hope I have of owning a beach house anywhere is to keep telling stories. So…

I started cycling and writing at 6:30 and by 8 I’d added almost exactly 1500 words. A short break to see my wife off, then back to the novel.

We’re supposed to leave here at noon or a little sooner, so by 11 I was getting a little paranoid about maybe forgetting to post this.

So I ended the day with around 2400 words.

Talk with you again soon.
