The Journal, Wednesday, April 25

Hey Folks,

Well, I guess I’m nothing if not an experimenter.

It would be more than easy for me to take a day off today and do nothing but read and maybe even nap.

I don’t nap. And I don’t mean as a general rule. I mean at all. I guard against it. I shudder at the thought. The inability to avoid napping, for me personally, will signal the beginning of old age.

Had a rough night. I doubt I got more than two hours’ sleep in total. And I checked the clock every time I woke up, or had to get up. So I know I didn’t sleep even a half-hour at a stretch.

I’m fine this morning physically, but I don’t “feel” like doing my job. But professionals show up every day, right? It isn’t like I’m contagious, and even if I were, it isn’t like there’s anyone in the Hovel but me.

So that’s what I’m going to do. It should be an interesting experiment. I’ll write, but I plan not to cycle back over anything until tomorrow. Then I’ll revisit everything I wrote today.

***

I started the day at 2:30 because I was frustrated at the get-up/lie-down cycle I’d been going through.

I didn’t bother with the Internet. Just made a mug of coffee, grabbed my thumb drive and headed out to the Hovel. Spent some time trying to de-grease my eyelids while playing Spider solitaire.

I did come up with another story idea for my novel. I’ll write it when I finish the one I started yesterday (and the next intermission) but I can’t say for sure where it’ll appear in the book. Maybe next, maybe last. That’s one of the joys of writing this sort of thing.

Oh, structurally there’s been one massive change. Originally I thought the stories might all be interconnected, with one leading to the next and so on.

Instead, they’re connected only by the intermissions, and in at least some cases, something that happens at the end of an intermission leads to (informs?) the next story.

Again, an experiment.

Back to the house for a break and to check the Internet. It’s 4 a.m.

Well, I might need to lose sleep more often. I returned to the Hovel at 8:30 and started writing where I left off yesterday. I finished the third story, then started through an intermission.

I took a few very short breaks along the way, but at 11:30 I had written just over 3300 words. So at least I know the experiment was a success.

Now I’m off for a break, then maybe back to write some more. I’d like to finish the intermission today and start another story.

Well, I finished the Intermission, then skipped down and added to the Introduction. (Since I’m writing this novel for both writers and readers, it will have an introduction or maybe “writer’s notes.”)

And then my energy flagged. That’s fine. I’ll start the next story tomorrow morning.

Anyway, I ended up with over 3800 words on the day. I’ll take it

Oh, you might notice I removed the other two WsIP from the accounting below. They aren’t abandoned, just set aside for awhile.

See you tomorrow.
