The Journal, Wednesday, November 14

Hey Folks,

Welcome to a new subcriber from Germany. I hope you’ll find something of value here.

My characters will definitely wrap up the story in my 35th novel today. Somehow, 35 seems like a milestone to me. I’m not sure why. My new short-term goal now is to write at least 50 novels. We’ll see.

I mentioned this a long while back, but if you haven’t subscribed to the newsletter from CrimeReads.com, you’re missing a bet.

The focus at CrimeReads is recommending books on crime (duh), but they regularly interview writers about their process, about various genre touchstones, and about what makes a “good” book. I strongly recommend it.

There are three entries in “Of Interest” today from CrimeReads. I tried to note (below) why I listed them there.

All I can say beyond that is please don’t be a genre snob. Even if you don’t write crime or mystery or horror (or whatever) genres, you can still learn a great deal about writing from writers of those genres.

Also in “Of Interest” today, a couple of young writers (Linda Maye Adams and Tony deCastro) make some interesting points in their own blogs. The former reports on a conference and the latter explains why he “went wide” when publishing his first novel.

And of course, there’s more in “Of Interest” as well.

I wrote a response to Dean’s “A Question I Got.” Of course, I urge you to read that as well. (grin)

To the Hovel at 3:45. I sipped coffee, looked around the Internet and wrote the stuff above. (Somehow, since I plugged in the larger monitor, I get the Internet at the Hovel now. So yes, I use it on my writing ‘puter, but only for writing-related things. No Facebook etc.)

To the house at 6 to visit with my wife and the kitten for awhile, and back to the Hovel at 6:30. I wrote about 800 words in the first session, then headed back to the house.

Another 900 words from 9 to 10, then back to the house.

Back to the Hovel and I pushed through until the story was finished. I’m going to take a day or two now to decide which idea to write next. (grin)

Talk with you again soon.

See Linda Maye Adams’ “BookBaby Marketing Conference (Part I)” at https://lindamayeadams.com/2018/11/13/bookbaby-marketing-conference-part-i/.

See “Liane Moriarty: ‘Secrets Always Drive Any Story'” at https://crimereads.com/liane-moriarty-secrets-always-drive-any-story/. A few gems for writers.

See “Why I went ‘Wide'” at https://tonydwritespulp.wordpress.com/2018/11/14/why-i-went-wide/. I can’t agree strongly enough.

See “Do Horror and Crime Go Together?” at https://crimereads.com/do-horror-and-crime-go-together/. Again, some good gems, and it isn’t all about horror.

See “What We Owe to Wilkie Collins’ The Woman In White” at https://crimereads.com/what-we-owe-to-wilkie-collins-the-woman-in-white/.

See “Heading to the Laboratory: Toxicology, DUID, and Kay Scarpetta” at https://www.leelofland.com/heading-to-the-laboratory-toxicology-duid-and-kay-scarpetta/.

See “How to Write a Book in 6 Steps” at https://blog.reedsy.com/how-to-write-a-book-in-6-steps/. This is ostensibly for a nonfiction book. Please take specific points with a large grain of salt, especially in Steps 5 and 6.

Finally, see “The More The Merrier: J.T. Ellison on Publishing Anthologies” at https://killzoneblog.com/2018/11/the-more-the-merrier-j-t-ellison-on-publishing-anthologies.html. The idea she lays out in discussing A Thousand Doors intrigued me. Hmmm. An anthology that’s actually a novel written by several authors? What a concept! Stay tuned.
