The Journal, Monday, October 8

Hey Folks,

Well, I just start thinking I’m posting way too much stuff about my current situation when I get a kind email saying some of you appreciate it. Thanks, I needed that. (grin)

Still, maybe it’s at least time to mix in some other things.

It’s bitterly cold here this morning (at 43°) under a crystal clear sky full of stars. But no wind, so it isn’t all that bad. And I keep reminding myself, this year, for the first time ever (having been a desert rat most of my life), I actually looked forward to cooler weather.

Still, I’m at my outside desk, and I’m a sight. Fortunately, it’s still an hour or so before dawn, so nobody can see me.

I’m wearing fur-lined leather house slippers, grey sweat pants, a zipped-up light-grey sweat jacket (can’t wear t-shirts yet), my chocolate-brown bath robe, and a black USMC ball cap. Yeah, I’m not kidding.

When my bride wakes, while she’s commuting from the coffee pot to her office with half-closed eyelids, I’ll slip past her and get dressed in more conventional garb. Hey, y’gotta keep the magic alive, amiright? (grin)

And a short, fat, balding old guy in a bathrobe, house slippers and a ball cap doesn’t cut it in that department.

I binge-watched more episodes of The Sopranos yesterday. Aside from being endlessly entertaining, the series is extremely well written in several respects.

The main characters are complex and real, with the “bad” guys having some redeeming qualities and the “good” guys having some flaws. The few cardboard (flat, strictly stereotypical) characters always serve a purpose, usually to foreshadow something that’s coming later.

The series is a masters class in writing fiction in pretty much any genre. I’ll probably expand on that statement in a topic or two soon.

I’ll probably repeat that whole “do nothing but hold down the couch and watch training films” thing today again. And part of tomorrow.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, I have the follow-up in Tucson for the most recently installed feature of my bionic self. That visit probably will result in me hearing “clean bill of health” no matter what they say. So I expect to return, at long last, to my WIP on Wednesday morning.

At that point, it will have been 19 days since I’ve written a word of fiction. Feels more like a year.

I expect it will be a relief to have a seat at my remote desk in the Hovel, which should be a toasty 70° no matter the outside temp.

I’ve also reclaimed the ability to type painlessly with both hands, so there’s that. Now if only my characters will welcome me with open arms after my prolonged absense, which I’m certain they believe is completely unwarranted. But we’ll see.

In the meantime, I can only hope some of this stuff’s been borderline entertaining. (grin)

Talk with you again soon.
