The Journal, Tuesday, October 9

Hey Folks,

Well, again today we’re off to see the wizard (cardio-electrician). That will happen early this afternoon. Then on November 1, I’ll have a followup with the cardio-plumber who implanted a stent. After that, I suspect I’ll be allowed to relax back into the semi-annual checkup routine.

As far as I know, today the tech will check the implanted device. Then someone will check the stitches on the incision and tell me what I can and can’t do for the next few weeks and on into the future.

I’m actually looking forward to that part of the conversation. I don’t mind limits as long as I know in advance what they are. After all, we all make adjustments pretty much every day of our life. My hope is that this will end the present drama.

I’m also looking forward to figuring out my new personal schedule, chiefly the writing part.

The plan is that I’ll write fiction every day, mostly because I want to see whether I can develop a streak in that regard.

Some of that writing will no doubt be on the WIP, the “Nick 3” novel that seems to have been languishing for months toward the bottom of these posts.

Some of it probably will also be short stories and novellas, whether or not those are connected in some way with the WIP.

The priority isn’t WHAT I write (WIP etc.), but THAT I write.

During this period of “rest,” I’ve been assailed by story starts. It’s a good problem to have.

Often (for me) a story start comes in the form of a line of dialogue, delivered, naturally, by a character. Other times it’s a setting or a mood. Now and then it’s a combination of those, and it’s delivered to me on a silver platter by the white-gloved hands of some inanity I’ve heard.

The most recent inanity is also an old one: “I had no choice.” My immediate thought anytime I hear that is “[Expletive deleted], you always have a choice.” To me, that one ranks right up there with some adult, when asked why he did something, who says “I don’t know.”

So that will more than likely be the basis for a forthcoming story. How is that a story starter? Maybe a character says it one time too often. Maybe a major corporation heads a stockholder’s annual report with it. Maybe some politician uses it to defray arguments.

How about you? Does that one set you off? If so, and if it appeals to you as a story starter, write it.

Anyway, gotta go.

Talk with you again soon.
