Quote of the Day

“Creativity is intelligence having fun.” Albert Einstein (via The Passive Voice)

For anyone who’s interested, I’ve just enrolled all my books at Smashwords in the Authors Give Back Sale. All my books are marked at 60% off through May 31.

That means, again, that many of my short stories there are free. But all of my books there are at least 60% off. Great time to jump into a series or sample some of my other works.

To see MY books, visit https://www.smashwords.com/profile/view/HStanbrough.

But it isn’t all about me. To see ALL books entered in the Authors Give Back sale, visit https://www.smashwords.com/ and browse your search options. I apologize in advance for the embarrassingly clunky user interface.

Yesterday I only hit a little over 4500 words (see Day 2). Still not a bad day, but not as good as I hoped either. I got stuck on some math for awhile.

Want to play along? How many humans can aliens confine in a 250-by-250 foot cage given 36 square feet of personal space (the standard used for maximum occupancy)? But aliens aren’t concerned with comfort, so drop that to 12 square feet. Now multiply by 18 cages.

Note: These are not necessarily the numbers that will end up in the novel. Remember, unlike real life, fiction has to be believable.

Also, in hectic times, not all cages hold exactly the same number. But even when writing into the dark, your approximations have to be accurate. (grin)

Today, I rolled out early, anxious to get back to the story. With this much shorter than usual Journal post, I’m getting an early start.

Talk with you again soon.

  1. Re: audiobooks’ sales coming to a full stop according to a source quoted by KKR in her blog, I guess she was talking about the US. As a European, I’ve always been really surprised by the fact that Americans could listen to audiobooks during their car commutes.

Where I live we usually have shorter commutes, but driving is much more stressful (lots of traffic, lots of complicated intersections, etc.). I would never even think of listening to an audiobook while I’m driving, that would be a serious hazard (the radio is fine most of the time, but listening to fiction isn’t).

But I do listen to podcasts or fiction while I’m doing chores around the house. So if many Swedes are the same as me, they might currently have more time to take care of their home while listening to audiobooks?

  2. Lol! I hear you. I wrote out my schedule yesterday… preorder coming up. And here I sit, hours into my day and just starting. But I know what i have to do before bedtime, and it’ll get done.
