The Journal, Thursday, November 29

Hey Folks,

Well, yesterday was a very productive day, though not in writing.

The trip to Sierra Vista took only a couple of hours. When I got back I activated my new phone, which is about the size of the flight deck on a small aircraft carrier. (grin) Then I played around with it for a little while.

Afterward I read over the very valuable comments of my first reader on Nick 4 (Consequences) and applied most of them.

Finally I uploaded the document to D2D, Amazon and Smashwords. It’s available at all three places for pre-ordering, and it will release to the public on January 15. For more info or to preorder at your favorite vendor, see https://www.books2read.com/u/3yDnyL.

Then I remembered Book 2 (Transitions) came out earlier in November, so I uploaded it to Bundlerabbit. Almost forgot about them.

So that was my day. That and a couple of easy loads of laundry. I’ll be back on my WIP today. Probably I’ll release that one into the wild in February.

I’m still looking for a first reader for my current WIP. It’s a hardboiled, twisted mystery and police procedural. If you’re interested, let me know.

I told a friend recently, regarding my WIP, that it feels like it’s going to run to 70- or 80- or 100-thousand words. I really hope it doesn’t. I can’t imagine enjoying a cast of characters over that long of a stretch.

If years (or even months) were the only way to measure writing a novel, I’m pretty sure I’d be doing something else, both for a living and for fun.

The longest story I’ve told to date is the Wes Crowley Saga at about 500,000 words. But that was spread over 10 books.

In the interim between publication of the first and last novel in that saga, I wrote 80 short stories, 6 other (not in the saga) novels, and 1 novella. I also compiled 13 collections of short stories. No character boredom for me. (grin)

Quote of the Day

“Beginning writers sometimes think they have to include giant conflicts in their stories[…]. I try to show them that a character who is looking for his lost keys is enough conflict to drive a story forward.” — N. West Moss on writing short stories at https://www.atonesitting.com/single-post/2017/08/13/Conflict-Isnt-A-Big-Deal-An-Interview-With-N-West-Moss.

I found out just before I went to bed last night that a beloved aunt passed away. Her husband, my paternal uncle, died in January of this year. The two of them had been married for 62 years. No condolences necessary, please. I just need a little down time.

I got out to the Hovel at 4:30. I did a lot of reading (see “Of Interest”) and finally got to the novel at around 9.

I wrote awhile, but had trouble getting into the story. Too much other stuff on my mind at the moment. Still a pretty good day.

Talk with you again tomorrow.
