The Journal, Thursday, September 27

Hey Folks,

Well, mostly editing today. In fact, all editing other than the brief time I spent online for items “Of Interest.” Some good ones today.

I’ve also decided to re-enter the workforce by way of expanding my services to other writers. To that end, soon I’ll offer the following:

First Chapter or Short Story Critique (fiction, up to 3000 words) — This consists of personalized instruction and recommendations on your specific scene and chapter openings, how to pull the reader into the story and keep him there, use of character names, and a great deal more. The cost isn’t set yet, but it will be reasonable.

Proofreading (fiction or nonfiction, any length 3/4 of one cent per word [.0075] per word, payable in advance) — This includes checking for punctuation, spelling and wrong-word usage as well as consistency issues: hyphenation, numbers, capitalization, character names and clothing, scene details, time and date details, etc. This is not an edit. I correct only what’s listed above and only if it needs to be corrected. I’ll make few, if any, commennts.

Straight Copyedit (fiction or nonfiction, .0075 to .0125 per word, depending on an unedited sample from your manuscript) — This will include some explanatory comments if I feel they’re necessary, but no outright instruction) To see what’s involved in a copyedit, please visit http://harveystanbrough.com/copyediting/ and scroll slightly down to “What I Do.”

Copyedit with Instruction (fiction or nonfiction, .0125 to .02 per word, depending on an unedited sample from your manuscript) — This is the whole enchilada. I tend to explain every edit (that isn’t self-explanatory), explain my recommendations, and instruct not only on what to do in a given place in the story but why.

If any of these interest you or if you have questions, email me at harveystanbrough@gmail.com and we can talk about it.

Talk with you again soon.
