The Journal, Tuesday, December 25

Hey Folks,

Well, I guess I’ll continue my streak of writing (almost) every day. It really is easy when I have a WIP.

It’s much easier to take a day off between stories than to take a day off when a story’s still unfolding. (grin) That’s the main reason I’m glad I was able to make the process of writing fun.

When I enjoy being surprised and entertained by the characters in their story, that expectation drives me back to the computer to write when I might not otherwise go.

Which of course is why I’m so frantic to start a new story when the one I’m working on is over. It’s a kind of Ouroboros, the writing itself working to make itself whole.

Once I start, it’s difficult to stop because it’s so much fun to see what unfolds. And once a story ends, it keys my hunger for the next one.

I suppose I also don’t like the idea of the characters standing around, arms crossed over their chests, their toes nervously tapping on the floor as they cast glances at their watches and wonder where the hell the Recorder is and why he’s late.

I won’t write for long today. Just a few enjoyable hours while I wait for my wife and son to rise. Then we’ll have the gifts and hot coffee and laughs and all the rest.

My son, faced with spending Christmas alone, drove down from Flagstaff to spend the day with us and enjoy dinner with us and the neighbors. Nobody should be left completely alone on Christmas day.

On this day, too, please remember those souls who serve in harm’s way so the rest of us can enjoy leisure time. They’re out there right now.

Talk with you again soon.
